Antique Rug Beaters

Antique rug beaters work very well to help maintain your antique rugs, and most of them are still in very good condition. Replicas of the old styles are also available and at much lower prices. It really doesn't matter whether you beater is old or new asl long as you purchase one that works.

You should have a larger one for a big rug and naturally if it is smaller items you only need a smaller sized beater. Many of the table sized mats and runners really only need a good pop or two with a small beater for continued usage. Dust can be a culprit for all kinds of woven goods.

The really old rug beaters were made of bent or twisted wire lodged into a wood handle. Many a homesteader made them using good old tender willow branches bent into a clover shape and dried. Once dried they would last for years. To make your own old time rug beater you can collect willow branches and bend them into the shape you want your beater to look. The ends should all be the same length at the handle end and tied together to keep them secure while the willow dries. Collecting the willow in the spring time will give you the most pliable branches. If they do dry out, you can fill the tub with warm water and soak the branches back to a workable stage. One your work has completely dried out you will be able to attach a handle to your beater.
